Test Strategy:
Dictionary meaning of strategy is an elaborate & systematic plan of action. Extending the above definition into testing world gives a very precise definition of test strategy.
A test strategy is a systematic plan of actions to be performed during testing. A Test Strategy document should give the information on what to test, what not to test, when to test, what kind of testing will be done, First & escalation point of contacts of all the relevant teams, defect logging procedure, SLA, tools that will be used for testing, management & reporting, & metrics that will be reported.
It should not include, how to test.

  1. Thanks for starting the discussion on this topic. Here is my view on this. Many people often get confused by the terms test strategy and test plan and what are the differences between them. In this article let us try to clear that doubt.

    When a project gets initiated, we create the test strategy first. Test-Strategy will tell how to go about testing a business requirement or feature. It details the approach that you will implement to ensure that the product is ready for shipping by release date. This will include the high level functional and non functional test-scripts that you run based on the requirements.

    1. Although, Test Planning & test strategy are two separate entities in a testing project.
      Test strategy works as one of the input parameters while creating a test plan.
